From images to techniques

Research into ancient Greek archery brings together written sources, iconographic material and experimental reconstructions. It examines shooting methods, equipment and the role of archers in ancient warfare. Related publications include studies of operational practice and tactics, as well as research into the shooting methods of ancient Greek archers.

The Sintashta bow

Working with Ivan Semyan, Spyros Bakas took part in the experimental reconstruction of a composite bow of the Sintashta culture. The project connects archaeological finds with the construction and testing of a working replica. The study was published in EXARC Journal in 2021, and the project received the EXARC Twinning Experimental Archaeology Award in 2019.

The Scythian bow and the iconographic archive

The photographic dossier includes a reconstructed Scythian bow, practical tests and depictions of archers in ancient vase painting. The iconographic material forms a separate research collection alongside the modern reconstructions.
